Oh we are gonna get into it today!
I have been mulling over this for a good two weeks. The power of no (in a polite way hehe). It's so finite, decisive, unmoving and all at the same time freeing.
If you're anything like me, you like to people please, and you want to make sure everyone is having a good time & sees you or experiences you in the best light possible. But no, that's not realistic, and attainable as a constant state of being. And that's normal!
In the regards to work life, we all know that the job title we have and job description always leads to more responsibility and tasks without value added (ie a raise or extra holiday etc) and you're just expected to go above and beyond, always. Now, don't get me wrong, being a team player, being proactive rather than reactive etc, are all traits that are important in any position, which shows initiative. BUT there's a difference between performing well under your role, and being asked to add more work for less pay. Yet somehow society values that because 'there's always someone out there willing to do your job' mentality.
Now tying this in with how this year has gone. Saying no and setting boundaries at work is probably the best thing you can do for yourself, especially when you can feel overwhelmed a lot easier nowadays. Even saying no to working out, taking a week off, taking the 'day' for yourself is important. Now when you finally decide to say no, acknowledge that this is a good thing, without any regrets or shame layered on top of it.
It's scary to do I get it, but my oh my, it is liberating to draw those lines out for others to understand and respect your time and effort more. One could even apply this to personal relationships too, but lets start with baby steps :)
Much Love,
